Winsham School extends a warm welcome

Whatever their ability, Winsham extends a warm welcome to all. It is a friendly place and its size being smaller than most schools, helps pupils to feel at home and to be quickly known and understood by staff.
Like all good schools, Winsham aims to provide quality education and to make sure that pupils work towards their best. It aims to develop skills and qualities that they will need to be happy and confident.
We have a committed and conscientious staff who offer support and help to the children. To be successful we need the support of parents acting in partnership with the School. Parents are urged to take a keen interest in their daughter’s/son’s school life. If you have any queries or concerns about your child or if you would like to visit for any reason, please get in touch.

Introduction

There is evidence of a school in the Parish since 1705, and maybe earlier.
The existing school building dates from 1850.     The school caters for children aged 4 to 11 years. In 2006/7 there are 17 children organised into 2 classes - one for Key Stage One children and one for Key Stage Two children.
The school is housed in the original Victorian building and accommodation consists of a
large Junior classroom which is used as a hall and gym when necessary, an infant room with attached patio activity area, a library/classroom, a further room used for lessons, secretary’s office, Headteacher’s office and kitchen.
Outside there is a playground with a climbing frame and a large shelter for wet or sunny days. A short walk along the lane leads to a large playing field.

Winsham Pre-school
is held in a room on the school site and there is close collaboration between school and pre-school.

Organisation of the Curriculum

As Winsham School has both a wide age and ability range in each class children are often organised into  groups for teaching. This ensures that each child is taught at their own level and may progress at their own pace.

Within the classroom different activities will often be taking place at the same time, some requiring more teacher “input” than others.  At other times of the day all the children will be engaged on the same activity.

Children are encouraged throughout their school life to become both more independent in their learning and to work collaboratively with other children.
The Literacy and the Numeracy Strategies mean that children usually spend two hours a day on the basic skills involved in English and Mathematics.
Each class has a rolling programme of topics that are used to teach many of the subjects, ICT, Science, History and Geography in particular, but with aspects from all other areas of the curriculum as well.  Each class has a rolling programme of topics that are used to teach many of the subjects, ICT, Science, History and Geography in particular, but with aspects from all other areas of the curriculum as well. This approach motivates the children and makes their learning exciting, relevant and meaningful.  Children are encouraged to bring items from home to school in order to enrich their topic work.

Home and School Links  -  Education is a partnership.

To provide the best for your child we need to work together.

The support and interest of parents in all aspects of school life is vital if a child is to gain most benefit from their education.

Parents are always welcome in school to talk about their child, look at what is going on or help out in any way.

Parents and Friends Association

There is an active PFA and all parents with children attending the school are members.  A committee organises several fund raising and social events throughout the year. We hope that parents will actively support the PFA which not only raises much needed extra funds for the school thereby enhancing the children’s education, but helps to promote cooperation and understanding between the school and home.

 Extra Curricular Activities

The school offers a range of extra curricular activities including recorders, football, netball, hockey, rounders, art, French ICT and Environmental club.  These activities take place either at lunchtime or after school.

The school is part of a  group of small schools around Chard called The Pentagon Group. Winsham School is part of the group that includes :
Ashill ,
Buckland St Mary,Combe St Nicholas,Neroche School, Broadway.

Football, unihoc, kwik cricket and rounders matches take place throughout the year.
There is also an annual swimming gala.Children also get together for “Gifted and Talented” Days and for Activity days.
