Christianity to-day VENUE: ST.STEPHEN'S CHURCH. A very welcome, if late, participation to the festival is the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the first translation of the New Testament into English. It was a brave action by William Tyndale, and it ultimately cost him his life. However it created significant reactions which, along with other reasons, resulted in the Reformation, and the creation of the Anglican Church. Since then more modern translations have been adopted, but the programme of reading of the New Testament as part of our festival will be spread over six consecutive days. Call in during the readings, and enjoy the peace within the church, and consider the implication of the words you will hear. As a matter of interest, it took until 1759 before the Roman Catholic Church , under Pope Clement XIII , allowed approved vernacular translations.
