Evening Art Classes in Winsham

Winsham has a long history of support for the fine arts, led by the Winsham Art Club which has been running regular meetings and workshops since its foundation over sixty years ago. It continues to provide a wide range of workshops and be a source of fellowship for local artists , and runs every year, the very popular Winsham Art Show at the Jubilee Hall.

However, it was widely recognised that daytime meetings meant that some Winsham and nearby residents could not attend due to work or other commitments.

To fill this gap Deborah Harris a resident of Winsham, with extensive experience of teaching art and design subjects at secondary school, to Advanced Level, had the idea that evening classes offering expert tutoring in popular aspects of visual arts could be popular with those wishing to develop their skills, and also for those wishing to start a fascinating and worthwhile interest which can last a lifetime.

After two years, these classes are proving to be very popular.

The topics cover a wide range of media and techniques including watercolour, acrylic painting, inks and mixed media, and also using various printmaking methods. Different projects are covered each session and  themes are varied, from still life and observational drawing to landscapes, portraits or more imaginary themes. The classes are suited to all levels from true beginner to the more experienced.

Generally , there are usually four sessions to a ‘term’ with a one or two-week gap between terms. Each session lasts three hours, with a break for tea or coffee. They sometimes begin with a short  PowerPoint presentation relating to the evening’s work topic, which can be downloaded later via e-mail to mobile or PC, if memories need refreshing. Following this, under guidance , members start to sketch-out their ideas, leading in the second part of the evening which is devoted to developing these ideas into a more finished artwork. Individual help is readily given....

Participants in the classes are expected to have their own basic equipment and materials but specialist materials when needed are provided. A list of requirements for each session is posted on this web page and also sent by e-mail to those who have booked a place on the session.

The classes are held in the Jubilee Hall on Tuesdays between 6-9pm.

The charge is £15 per session , or £50 if you book all four sessions in the term (most students do this and enjoy the discount). However the option to attend only those sessions of especial interest is available.

The work atmosphere is friendly and fun, but with the aim of providing a sound foundation for the topics selected, guided by Deborah, who leads  by example, offering her considerable experience and talent in encouraging students to develop and achieve worthwhile results and

skills

If you are an absolute beginner, it is probably useful to contact Deborah Harris (T:01460 30389 or deborahjharris23@gmail.com) in the first instance, who will be pleased to advise you as to the choices open to you in terms of the best media to start with, and the basic materials you will need. Once started you will quickly sense your own artistic direction of travel when further expert advice will gladly be given .

PLEASE NOTE: Topics for 10th and 17th March have been interchanged

Dear All
Some very focussed drawing led to very dainty paintings, well done.
Next week the theme is 'Shoes'!
There are two ways you can tackle this....as a traditional watercolour painting (see page 2 artists) or as a funky exploration of colour, shape and pattern (see page 1 artists).  This would possibly work best in acrylics but you could take a similar approach in watercolours, up to you.  Even a bit of both.
Bring List
1. A pair of shoes, wellies or trainers to draw from OR a photo of your fave pair of the above if you want to trace rather than work from observation.  If you need help printing, send me a photo.
2. Watercolour kits if you are going 'traditional'.
3. Acrylic kits if you want to layer colours and patterns. I will bring the pattern stencils and some wrapping paper/newspaper/wallpaper that can work as background options.
4. Pencil case and hairdryer.
